I had lived for so long
But had never really been alive
I had had many love me
But had loved only once
I had seen people come and go
Life and death as one
But never really stopped to care
About who's turn was next to come
So they sent me to a slayer
The champion of their fight
The one who was to change the world
And rid it of its plight
But things do not always
Work out as planned
Somewhere down the line
We began to think with our hearts
Instead of our minds
This deed could not be left unpunished
This act, not without consequence
For our love was tragic
And one that was never meant to happen
I left her for the last time
Heading for a place where I could hide
Lose myself in the shadows
With only sorrow as my guide
But once again they intervened
Showing me their power
I was one of theirs now
Until my final hour
He was a simple messenger
A seer of things to come
He saw people, places, things
In visions that left him numb
Always thought of himself as a coward
Believing that he deserved
The misfortune that came his way
Because he had committed an unthinkable horror
Never quite thought of himself as a man
For the demons that rested inside
Constantly tormented him
With a past he would rather leave behind
Then the night fell upon us
With a moonless sky
When all would be decided
I was ready to take that plunge
To confront death in the eye
To stare into the face
That had once been mine
But he beat me to it
Believing it was his turn to go
That this was the only way
For his sins that he could atone
And as I watched him jump
My still heart fell a hundred feet
Straight towards the ground
With nothing there to meet
I stood there staring
As his life burned away
No bones, no ash
To remember him by this day
The days faded into months
The months into years
And yet it all still feels so fresh
As do the tears
No matter if I should live another century
Or only one more moment
The fates be damned for all I care
Because they took from me
The best person they could have sent
A True Friend
